Barry Skinner

Success

Having various qualifications for instructing Outdoor Activities, such as rock climbing, mountain walking, kayaking, skiing etc, he freelanced as an instructor at several centres, before moving permanently to Plas Caerdeon, the outdoor centre belonging to Liverpool Hope University. He retired in 1998 as Deputy Head of the Centre. During this period he was a leader and Search Manager with the South Snowdonia Search and Rescue Team and an Assessor for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

His two ambitions in life were:

a) never to become an adult and
b) never to have a proper job.

He now lives with his partner Anne and when not in Snowdonia, they can be found exploring Britain in their motorhome.

About Barry

Barry in his studio

Barry Skinner has lived in Beddgelert since 1986.
He was born in Coventry and started walking and climbing in the mountains of Snowdonia at the age of fifteen.

After a spell in retailing and interior design, he left all behind in 1964 and for the next sixteen years toured Britain, Europe and America playing guitar and singing his own and traditional songs, recording several albums and appearing on television and radio. He was one of the founding members of the first Coventry Folk Club in 1962, is still involved in performing and writing music and is available for folk club, concert and festival bookings.

From 1979 until 1986 he worked for the Coventry Education Waterways Scheme, running narrow boats for school groups. During this time he wrote a large number of songs about the canals.

In 1986 he came to live permanently in Snowdonia, initially building custom made doll's houses to commission and also painting and enamelling. Barry generally turns his landscape photographs into Greeting Cards, as also images of his own paintings. A4 prints are available of both landscape and abstract photographs.
