I like to think I paint what people see when looking at a village, town or landscape.

I believe people tend to see an overall picture and then add detail, real or imagined, from their memory when they get home. My pictures leave room for those individual additions.

Certain things in any memory are predominant, such as a chapel, church or castle as a centrepiece. What is around that particular centrepiece can change as people's moods take them. Therefore the memory is an impression of the reality.

Paintings

I paint an impressionistic view of Welsh villages towns, and landscapes especially those by the sea. I love Cornwall because it has an affiliation with Wales - the same small, involved communities.

A village grows with, and into the landscape, because of the usage of that village, e.g. quarrying, mining, fishing etc as opposed to towns, which are superimposed upon the landscape for commercial reasons, although it should be remembered that towns had an original natural reason for their situation, such as a quarry, mine or river. Even though I love the wilderness, I am fascinated by the Industrial Revolution, particularly its connection with the canal network.

The Welsh landscape can appear desolate, especially on a wet winter's day and yet the rocks and rivers have a stark beauty, which can change rapidly with the introduction of sunlight or snow.
